The chart shows the latest forecast for the cost, in percent of GDP, of the federal government’s Medicare program for seniors through 2095. It shows the cost of each of the three major parts of Medicare: the Part A Hospital Insurance program, the Part B Supplementary Medical Insurance program and the Part D Supplementary Medical Insurance drug benefit. See the Center for Medicare and Medicaid’s website for more details.
The numbers are obtained from the current 2023 Medicare Trustees Report using numbers from a spreadsheet “HI and SMI Incurred Expenditures as a Percentage of the Gross Domestic Product” available in Expanded and Suppplementary Tables.
