There are three levels of governments in the US: federal, state, and local.The following table shows current spending for federal, state and local governments, and also total overall spending. Federal spending includes grants and transfers to state and local governments. State and local government spending includes “direct” spending on programs only.

Spending data is from official government sources.
  Federal data since 1962 comes from the president’s budget.
  All other spending data comes from the US Census Bureau.

Gross Domestic Product data comes from US Bureau of Economic Analysis and measuringworth.com.

Federal spending data begins in 1792.

State and local spending data begins in 1890.

State and local spending data for individual states begins in 1957.

House Budget Plan for FY16

On August 15, 2015, we updated usgovernmentspending.com with the numbers from the draft budget resolution for FY16 prepared by the House Budget Committee.  The site now shows data from the current FY16 Budget Resolution and also Ryan-authored budget resolutions for FY12, FY13, FY14 and FY15.
